River dolphins as indicators of ecosystem degradation in large tropical rivers

► Human stressors were used to provide an estimate of ecosystem degradation in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. ► We investigated the statistical relationships between estimates of ecosystem degradation and potential ecological indicators. ► River dolphins were shown to be good indicators of ecosystem degradation, sentinel and flagship species. ► River dolphins may be good candidates to monitor the conservation status of large tropical rivers.
