Tree ring width and wood density as the indicators of climatic factors and insect outbreaks affecting spruce growth

► We examine the importance of climate and insect attack on the growth of Norway spruce. ► A strong influence of May precipitation on TRW and insect outbreaks on MID was observed. ► Missing tree rings, lower MXD together with higher MID indicate increased insect activity.
