► Effectiveness, not management, is the core issue when assessing protected areas. ► The SIAPA assesses if protected areas are effective individually or comparatively. ► It is made of indicators integrated into indexes and these, into a super-index. ► Two models were developed: complete (43 indicators) and simplified (28 indicators). ► It is designed primarily for managers and policymakers.
