► Mixer consisting of a series of semielliptical blades affords intensification of MF. ► The permeation flux is significantly increased and energy savings are obtained. ► Disruption of stagnant boundary layer is induced by formation of unique flow field. ► The flow field is characterised by high local velocities and appearance of secondary flows.
