► A technique is developed for microstructural optimization of mordenite membranes. ► An ultrathin seed layer is formed by using assembled nanocrystals. ► A high performance mordenite membrane is grown directly on a macroporous support. ► F− is used as one of the microstructure modifiers to optimize distribution of Al atom in film. ► Grain boundaries can be kept intact for long-term acidic corrosion.
