A paleopedologic and ichnologic perspective of the terrestrial Pennsylvanian landscape in the distal Appalachian Basin, U.S.A.

► We describe paleosols and ichnofossils from the Late Pennsylvanian Conemaugh Group. ► We differentiate four different pedotypes and four associated ichnocoenoses. ► Paleosol properties are variable both vertically and laterally across the study area. ► Soil biota plays a major role in Late Pennsylvanian soil formation. ► Local rather than regional processes control paleosol properties in the study area.
