Review: Game theory of public goods in one-shot social dilemmas without assortment

► We review the theory of public goods in biology. ► If public goods are a non-linear function of the contributions then cooperation is possible without assortment. ► A polymorphic state can be stable in which producers and non-producers coexist. ► This leads to testable predictions and allows a prescriptive approach to cooperation.
