Evolutionary games in deme structured, finite populations

► We consider evolutionary dynamics of two competing types in a finite population. ► The population is divided into demes. ► We derive a simple criterion to determine which type is favored by selection. ► The Pareto efficient type is favored when competition in demes is weak. ► For the prisoner's dilemma game we explain how deme structure facilitates cooperation.
