► We model the spatial spread of airborne diseases by pathogen-carrying droplets. ► The importance of an ambient airflow on the infection dynamics is examined. ► Infection results from direct contact between droplets and susceptible individuals. ► A threshold air velocity, above which disease transmission is impaired, is derived. ► Droplet convection can cause secondary infections in the absence of infected people.
