► Cameras baited with mackerel and Sargassum were used in the abyssal Sargasso Sea. ► Mackerel attracted a community of ophidiid fish and few rattails. ► Differing productivity regimes may explain regional differences in scavenging fish. ► Sargassum attracted a different community dominated by a large isopod.
