Nitrogen isotope gradients off Peru and Ecuador related to upwelling, productivity, nutrient uptake and oxygen deficiency

► Nitrogen isotopes of nitrate and surface sediments in the Peru upwelling reveal strong latitudinal gradients. ► N-loss processes lead to δ15N increase under influence of the oxygen minimum zone. ► Partial nitrate utilization has an effect mainly outside the OMZ and perennial upwelling.
