Ellagic acid protects mitochondria from β-adrenergic agonist induced myocardial damage in rats; evidence from in vivo, in vitro and ultra structural study

► The protective effects of ellagic acid in mitochondria were studied. ► Cardiotoxicy was evidenced by changes in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes. ► Ellagic acid pretreatment decreased lipid peroxidation and reduced mitochondrial damage. ► Transmission electron microscopic study proved the effect of ellagic acid. ► In vitro studies explained the mechanism of action of ellagic acid.
