Layered hydrophilic/hydrophobic fiber media for water-in-oil coalescence

► We construct a filter medium of alternating wetting and non-wetting layers. ► The effective wettability is determined using a modified Washburn's approach. ► The effective wettability can be controlled by the design of the composite layers. ► The best liquid-liquid separation occurred with an intermediate L/H value.
