Early Cretaceous araucarian driftwood from hemipelagic sediments of the Puez area, South Tyrol, Italy

► We report the first fossil wood from the Cretaceous of Puez, South Tyrol, Italy. ► The fossil occurs as driftwood in mid-Albian hemipelagic sediments of the Puez Formation. ► It is assigned to Agathoxylon and lacks tree-rings, indicative of humid climate. ► Cylindrical chambers containing faecal pellets suggest infestation by oribatid mites. ► Common teredinid borings of Teredolites longissimus type indicate that the trunk drifted out to sea prior to burial.
