A new insight into Marangoni effect in non-isothermal falling liquid films

Particular flow patterns of a vertical heated/cooled liquid film have been explored with an infrared technique for the first time. The Marangoni forces caused by the temperature variations of the film, drive the liquid particles from hot to cold points, inducing novel shrinkage/expansion of the heated/cooled film. It is explored that the lateral Marangoni effect can strongly affect the interfacial transfer area. A correlation has been proposed to evaluate this influence, and is expected to be useful in designing the transfer equipments.
