Using Principal Component Analysis for information-rich socio-ecological vulnerability mapping in Southern Africa

► We use PCA to create spatially-explicit indices of socio-ecological vulnerability. ► Aggregate indices are produced for the Southern Africa Development Community. ► We identify four statistically independent components of vulnerability. ► Our indices highlight spatial variability in regional vulnerability. ► PCA based indices represent a potentially information rich policy tool.
