► We model a dairy cattle farming system feeding almost exclusively on grass in France. ► A model was developed with some interactions with advisers and could be used by them. ► The model is used to understand sensitivity and adaptive capacities of the systems. ► The amount of forage bought was not only explained by the forage autonomy of farms. ► Farms with high forage autonomy can resist to repeated biomass growth variability.
