Grindability determination of torrefied biomass materials using the Hybrid Work Index

► A work index was developed called the Hybrid Work Index for biomass materials. ► The HWI was shown to be sensitive to heat treatment and energy input. ► The comminution order was shown to be sensitive to degree of treatment. ► The HWI equation was shown to produce a relative grinding energy. ► Further study could lead to an industrial standard for treated biomass materials.
