Relationships between the sorption behaviour of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and ethane on coals

► Sorption capacity of 23 coals for different gases were compared. ► Methane/nitrogen ratio for sorption capacity was constant for all coals. ► The CO2/CH4 sorption capacity ratio decreased with increasing rank. ► The ethane/CH4 sorption capacity ratio also decreased with increasing rank.
