► This study analyzed the structural behavior of underground GRP pipes. ► Assumptions of earth pressure distribution and theories of mechanics were used for analyses. ► A safety evaluation method was proposed considering fracture characteristics of GRP pipe wall materials. ► This study proposed methods to determine an optimum pipe wall thickness and total bending moment.
