Load following in a deregulated power system with Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator

Load following is considered to be an ancillary service in a deregulated power system. This paper investigates the effect of a Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) for load following in a deregulated two area interconnected thermal system with two GENCOs and two DISCOs in either areas. Optimal gain settings of the integral controllers in the control areas are obtained using Genetic Algorithm by minimizing a quadratic performance index. Simulation studies carried out in MATLAB validates that a Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator in series with tie-line can effectively improve the load following performance of the power system in a deregulated environment.
