• We simulate a steady laminar premixed flame with flamelet-generated manifolds method.
• Different species are used as the progress variables.
• Solely choosing H2O as a progress leads to perturbation in the flame post region.
• A sensitivity analysis on dominant reactions that constitute H2O is performed
To investigate how the selection of progress variable in flamelet-generated manifolds (FGM) affects the prediction of flame front, a steady laminar premixed flame is studied. The progress variables are CO2, O2 and H2O. The 1D FGM and the detailed chemistry methods represented comparable results regarding the flame front and flame zone properties. Simulations were separately performed by using the aforementioned progress variables and the prediction of the flame front was compared. A sensitivity analysis shows that H2O does not show a monotonic behavior in the reaction zone, which renders it inappropriate as a progress variable choice.
