Membrane damages under high pressure of human erythrocytes agglutinated by concanavalin A

- Large clumps of trypsin-treated erythrocytes by concanavalin A (Con A) are stable against a pressure of 200 MPa.
- Tight agglutination or packing of erythrocytes suppresses the release of large vesicle followed by hemolysis.
- Pyrene excimer fluorescence appears upon compression of agglutinated or packed ghosts.
- Membrane damages such as spectrin denaturation and vesiculation by pressure are induced irrespective of cell agglutination or packing.
