Choline alkylsulfates - New promising green surfactants

► Using choline as counterion improves the solubility of alkylsulfate surfactants. ► The Krafft point and cmc of choline dodecylsulfate (ChDS) were determined. ► Cytotoxicity studies show that ChDS is as harmless as SDS. ► Experiments with excess salt confirm the concept of matching water affinities. ► Choline alkylsulfates represent a promising class of efficient green surfactants.
