Photolysis of perfluoroazooctane in the presence of carbon films, such as diamond-like carbon and diamond films, led to a covalent modification of their surface to introduce perfluorooctyl functional groups using dry process, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. The carbon films modified with fluorine moieties showed a reduction of surface energy evaluated by contact angle to water and oil compared with pristine carbon films, and chemical stabilities due to the covalent modification.
