This paper presents a comparative study of steady state characteristics of a self-excited induction generator operating in shunt, short-shunt and long-shunt configurations. First the steady state problem of the generator, for all three operating configurations, is formulated in a very general way and represented by a single set of equations. A numerical based routine is then employed to solve the formulated problem without explicitly expressing the equations in terms of actual unknowns. The effectiveness of the proposed method is then vigorously tested on a three-phase, 1.5-kW induction generator operating in shunt, short-shunt and long-shunt configurations. The simulation results obtained by the proposed method are also compared with the corresponding actual values found through an experimental setup and are observed to be in very good agreement.
