► Intraperitoneal injections of ethanol induced state-dependent retrieval in mice. ► Pre-test intra-DH infusions of salbutamol along with ethanol improved retrieval. ► Pre-test intra-DH infusions of propranolol prevented state-dependent retrieval. ► Intra-DH infusions of propranolol inhibited the effect of salbutamol. ► β-Adrenoceptors in the DH are involved in ethanol state-dependent retrieval.
