Recent advances in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) technologies and their incorporation with geographic information system (GIS) technologies offer vast opportunities for development and application of agriculture fields. This paper describes the design and implementation of jujube real-time monitoring and management system based on the WSN and GIS in germplasm resources fields. This system includes two parts: one is the data monitoring and collecting part based on the WSN, in which its sensor nodes can measure and collect various parameters such as air temperature, soil information, wind speed, rainfall and also some information of image and video. In addition, we discussed the communication protocol and nodes deployment method in this part. Another part is the data management system which consists of the remote monitoring subsystem and the jujube germplasm resources expert subsystem. It provides functions of jujube germplasm information storage and queries of remote monitoring data with the GIS technology. This work not only promotes the management of jujube trees, but also helps us cultivating superior varieties.
