The latest labour market reforms in Spain have affected legal dismissal regulations by clarifying causes, and reducing costs, among other aspects. Among the expected effects of these legal changes is the weakening the 'last in, first out' rule in dismissals of workers with open-ended contracts. Using data from the Longitudinal Working Lives Sample from 2005 to 2011, the empirical analysis shows that the majority of contracts that are terminated non-voluntarily were in the job for less than two years. However, this pattern changes in 2010 and 2011, with the proportion of dismissals increasing in permanent workers who have been in the same job for more than two years.
