Anticipation effect in pedestrian dynamics: Modeling and experiments

► We have newly introduced the effect of anticipation to the floor field model. ► We have performed counter-flow simulation of pedestrians with our model. ► Our results indicate that both weak and excessive anticipation decrease pedestrian flow. ► There is an optimal strength of anticipation to achieve the smoothest counter flow. ► The results of our simulation are verified by our experiment with real pedestrians.
