A roadmap towards a low-carbon society in Japan using backcasting methodology: Feasible pathways for achieving an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050

► Reducing CO2 emissions by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050 is achievable in Japan. ► Feasible pathway is examined by the AIM/Backcasting Model based on backcasting methodology. ► Taking steps sooner will increase the likelihood of achieving a low-carbon society. ► Major investment will be needed in the early stage of the analytical periods. ► Viewed in the long term, this can be recovered by reduction in energy consumption.
