On constructing accurate approximations of first integrals for difference equations

► Multiple scales are presented for nonlinear systems of difference equations. ► Approximations of first integrals are constructed on long iteration-scales. ► All invariance factors have to satisfy a functional equation. ► The method is applied to a Van der Pol equation, and a Rayleigh equation.
