In this paper a new method based on structured singular value (μμ-synthesis) is proposed for the robust decentralized unified power flow controller (UPFC) design. To achieve decentralization, using the Schauder fixed point theorem the synthesis and analysis of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control system is transformed into a set of equivalent multi-input single-output (MISO) control system. To cope with power system uncertainties μμ-synthesis technique is being used for designing of UPFC controllers. The proposed μμ-based controller has a decentralized scheme which has the advantage of reduction in the controller complexity and suitability for practical implementation. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy on damping low frequency oscillations is evaluated under different operating conditions and compared with the conventional controller to demonstrate its robust performance through nonlinear simulation and some performance indices.
