Extraction and structural characterisation of rhamnogalacturonan I-type pectic polysaccharides from potato cell wall

► Yield and debranching of Rhamnogalacturonan I (RG I) was dependent on the type of treatment. ► KOH treatments led to less degradation of side chains of RG I than NaOH ones. ► Debranching of arabinan side chains of RG I was more significant than that of galactan ones. ► Enzymatic treatment resulted in the recovery of intact RG I with no side chain debranching. ► Weak and strong acidic fractions exhibited a common monosaccharide pattern of galactan-rich RG I.
