Protective coatings on stainless steel bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers

There is an urgent need for reducing the cost of PEM electrolysis. The bipolar plates are the most expensive component of the stack. Coatings of Ti and 8 wt% Pt/Ti on stainless steel are developed, offering full protection to the substrate in simulated and real environment of a PEM electrolyser. Thus, the cost of the stack can be largely reduced.275
