This paper presents the development of a bitumen–stone adhesive zone damage model for the design of ravelling resistant porous asphalt concrete. New set-ups that allow fatigue characterization at meso-scale on the adhesive zone were developed. Use was made of the Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) and Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). A damage model was proposed based on a linear damage rule to explain the damage behavior of the adhesive zone in combination with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. The proposed model allows to translate complex adhesive zone stress signals obtained from finite element modelling into life expectancies.
► New test setup for fatigue testing.
► Fatigue characterization at meso-scale.
► New damage model that takes into account mixed shear and normal stress states.
► Damage development taking into account the stress signal.
