Distribution of millscale on corroded steel bars and penetration of steel corrosion products in concrete

► Distribution and thickness of millscale was investigated. ► Penetration of rust into concrete happens together with rust layer generation. ► Rust neither fills nor penetrates cracks before concrete surface cracking. ► A two-stage model is proposed to predict corrosion at concrete cover cracking.
