Role of grain boundary nature and residual strain in controlling sensitisation of type 304 stainless steel

► Low-level of residual strain improved resistance to sensitisation. ► High fraction of special boundaries did not always reduce sensitisation. ► Area attacked during the EPR test correlated well with degree of sensitisation. ► Volume loss during the EPR test also correlated well with degree of sensitisation.
