Self-healing coatings using superabsorbent polymers for corrosion inhibition in carbon steel

► Coatings of a superabsorbent polymer were applied onto carbon steel. ► The polarization resistance of the scratched specimen increased with time. ► Three-layer coating of a superabsorbent polymer had self-healing capability. ► Self-healing effect was due to polymer swelling, which prevented oxygen diffusion.
