Effect of anvil geometry on the stretching of cylinders

This work presents a study on the hot forging of cylinders, in open die, and applying radial loads, a process known as stretching. Results obtained from the finite element analysis software MSC.Superform 2004 were compared with those obtained from experiments conducted in plasticine specimens. Stretching processes with plane and 135° V-anvils were analyzed. The stress distribution, numerically calculated, was compared with the configuration of the plasticine body after the experiment. The plane anvil resulted in tensile stresses enough to open cracks in the plasticine body. In the numerical model with V-anvils, compressive stresses inside the cylinder were observed. Both the numerical and experimental studies showed a larger increase in cylinder length by using the V-anvil, associated with a faster reduction in cross-section. Additionally, in the numerical model, the principal stress criterion showed that V-anvils were more prone to crack propagation.
