In this paper, a new technique exploiting the polarization properties of Ï-phase-shifted Bragg grating (ÏFBG) for transverse load sensing is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The spectral characterization of the polarization dependent loss (PDL) of the ÏFBG is studied. The evolution of the PDL response of the ÏFBG with respect to the transverse load is analyzed. The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the PDL response of the ÏFBG have higher load sensitivities than that of the amplitude spectra. Based on the information of the main lobe of PDL as a function of wavelength, the transverse loads are measured. Moreover, the performance of the sensor is not affected by strain and temperature variations.
