In situ synthesis of (TiB2Â +Â SiC)/Ti3SiC2 composites by hot pressing

► Novel (TiB2+SiC)/Ti3SiC2 composite ceramics were prepared by in situ hot pressing. ► In situ formed TiB2 and SiC phases are columnar and granular grains respectively. ► It is interesting to note that SiC grains are embedded in Ti3SiC2 matrix grains. ► TiB2 and SiC exhibit significant synergistic strengthening and toughening effect. ► The materials show excellent properties (σb=861MPa, KIC=9.56MPa·m1/2, HV=9.79GPa).
