Substrate-versatile approach to multifunctional superamphiphobic coatings with mechanical durable property from quartz sand

Despite the progresses in the preparation of the superamphiphobic coatings have increased drastically, the fragile micro/nano-structures of these coatings are usually easily destroyed by external force, which has restricted their wide uses in academic and industrial areas. In this study, a mechanically durable and multifunctional superamphiphobic coating is successfully fabricated by employing quartz sand particles and organic silane via a simple drop coating method. The obtained coatings show high repellency to water and oils, even the hexadecane with surface tension as low as 27.5 mN/m. More importantly, the superamphiphobic coatings also exhibit excellent mechanical durability, which can maintain their superamphiphobicity even after abrasion with a piece of sandpaper over a length of 280 cm. In addition, the coating shows durable superamphiphobicity toward strong acidic/alkali solutions, boiling water, UV irradiation and high temperature, which demonstrates the outstanding chemical and environmental stability. The coatings also have excellent self-cleaning property and low adhesion to both water and oils. Apart from these characteristics, the as-prepared coatings can be easily employed to different kinds of substrates. This facile fabrication of the mechanically durable and multifunctional superamphiphobic coatings will provide the advantages for large-scale production and accelerate the real application of the super-repellent materials.
