CrC/a-C:H coatings for highly loaded, low friction applications under formulated oil lubrication

► CrC/a-C:H coatings were made by sputtering of Cr targets in Ar/C2H2 atmosphere. ► Tribological properties under oil lubrication (with and without MoDTC additive) ► CrC/a-C:H coatings with 50 at% Cr show excellent wear and friction properties. ► Oil with MoDTC: wear resistance of CrC/a-C:H is superior to that of a-C:H coatings. ► CrC/a-C:H: high potential tribological coating under formulated oil lubrication
