► A simulation model of a real CO2 absorption process with methyldiethanolamine solvent and piperazine as an activator. ► Assembled and inserted a physical property package for activated methyldiethanolamine (a-MDEA) into ASPEN Plus. ► Used design and actual data from an actual acid gas removal unit in a natural sweetening process to validate the model. ► Found that simulation results agreed well with design and actual data. ► Found the best trade-off between CO2 recovery and energy consumption at 5 wt% PZ concentration in a 45 wt% aqueous MDEA.
