Comparison of two extraction procedures for the assessment of sediment genotoxicity: Implication of polar organic compounds

► Two extraction procedures were compared to assess genotoxicity of sediments of the Berre lagoon. ► Organic mutagens were extracted by hexane/dichloromethane and 2-propanol. ► Genotoxicity was evaluated by the Ames test, the comet and the micronucleus assays. ► Extraction by hexane/dichloromethane mainly selected non-polar mutagens (PAHs). ► Extraction by 2-propanol mainly selected polar mutagens (aromatic amines and nitro arenes).
