Diagnosis is essentially based on clinical symptoms and urine culture. Haemoculture is only recommended in certain situations and in most cases no complementary diagnostic tests are required. Treatment can usually be given as an outpatient and is empirical according to the local sensitivity pattern of Escherichia coli, which is the causative agent of more than 80% of these infections. Asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) and complicated UTI are other forms in which UTI present.
