Contribution à l'histoire des rééducations

The aim of this paper is to provide the French-speaking medical community with a recent update on the contribution of Johann Conrad Amman (1667-1724) De Loquela. This often-cited reference has fed a controversy of those opposing sign language rather than other techniques, particularly corrective phonetics, applied to articulation and speech disorders. Similarly, few biographic elements are available in French. Amman worked and published in Amsterdam, then the intellectual capital of Europe. His work was translated into many languages but the first French translation appeared in 1779. Charles-Nicolas Beauvais de Préau published the first translation in appendix to the Cours élémentaire d'éducation des sourds et muets de naissance of Claude François Deschamps de Champloiseau. A few biographical data are also given together with significant extracts from the third chapter of the Dissertation sur la parole.
