Headache is a common complaint among patients seeking care at an emergency department (ED). Fortunately, headache associated with significant morbidity and mortality occurs infrequently. The ED physician must be able to establish the correct diagnosis for the headache while also ruling out any possibility of organic disease or life-threatening illness. As with all disorders, the key to diagnosis is a good history. This article reviews the main aetiologies of headaches in adults and children.
