Malaria

In endemic areas of the world and in travellers to these areas, malaria is a common cause of febrile illness and can lead to a severe and life-threatening illness, particularly when managed inappropriately. Prevention is the cornerstone of good malaria control. A major reason for progression to severe disease is missed or delayed diagnosis. Blood film remains the gold standard for diagnosis. Once the diagnosis has been made, administration of an appropriate antimalarial drug is important. Falciparum malaria can lead to many severe complications such as cerebral malaria, anaemia and respiratory distress, each of which requires careful consideration and specific management.
